Tattoo aftercareChăm sóc hình xăm mới

A new tattoo is an open wound for its first days. Most healing problems come from three things: sun, picking and soaking. Here is what to do, day by day, adjusted for Saigon's heat, humidity and motorbike commutes.

Day by day

Theo từng ngày

  1. Day 0The first hours
    • Keep the wrap or film on for as long as we tell you: a few hours for plastic wrap, several days for a breathable second-skin film.
    • Wash your hands before touching the tattoo.
    • Remove the wrap, wash gently with lukewarm water and an unscented soap, and pat dry with a clean paper towel.
    • Let it air-dry for ten minutes, then apply a very thin layer of unscented moisturiser.
  2. Days 1–3Weeping
    • Wash two or three times a day and after sweating.
    • Clear fluid and a little ink on the paper towel is normal.
    • Sleep on clean sheets and wear loose, clean cotton over it.
    • Skip heavy workouts that stretch or rub the area.
  3. Days 4–14Peeling
    • The tattoo peels and itches. Do not pick or scratch; tap it lightly instead.
    • Keep moisturising thinly. Too much cream softens the skin and slows healing.
    • No swimming pools, sea, bathtubs or saunas.
    • Keep it out of direct sun completely.
  4. Weeks 2–4Cloudy
    • The surface has closed, but the tattoo may look milky or dull. This is normal and clears.
    • Light exercise is fine. Still no soaking and no direct sun.
    • When the skin no longer shines and feels like the rest of your arm, the surface has healed.
  5. For lifeKeeping it sharp
    • Use SPF 50 sunscreen on the tattoo whenever it sees the sun.
    • Keep the skin moisturised; dry skin makes ink look grey.
    • Send us a photo once it has settled, at around a month.

Heat, sweat and motorbikes

  • Sweat: rinse and pat dry after you sweat, then a thin layer of moisturiser. Salt and bacteria sitting on fresh skin cause most irritation.
  • Motorbike sun: the tattoo on your forearm or hand gets more sun on a 20-minute ride than in an hour outside. Cover it with a loose long sleeve, not a tight one, for the first month.
  • Rain and dust: wash the tattoo when you arrive, before anything else.
  • Air conditioning: dry air makes healing skin tight and itchy. Moisturise a little more often, but just as thinly.
  • Beach trips: wait until the tattoo is fully healed, about four weeks, before swimming in the sea in Vũng Tàu, Nha Trang or anywhere else.

Notes by style

  • Fine line: heals fastest, often in two weeks. Light lines can look faint at first and come back as the skin clears.
  • Colour: flakes more and looks cloudy longer. Never pull the coloured flakes off.
  • Large pieces: sleeves and back pieces can feel sore and warm for two or three days. Rest, drink water, and sleep on clean sheets.
  • Lettering: keep it out of the sun so thin letters stay crisp.

When to see a doctor

Some redness and swelling for the first two or three days is normal. See a doctor if, after day three, you notice:

  • redness that spreads or grows instead of shrinking
  • increasing heat, swelling or pain
  • pus, a bad smell or yellow crust
  • red streaks running from the tattoo, or fever

Then tell us, so we can help you through the rest of the healing.

This guide is general advice. If we gave you different instructions for your piece or your film, follow those.

Healing questions

Can I shower with a new tattoo?

Yes. Short showers are fine from day one. Avoid hot water and do not let the shower beat directly on the tattoo for long. Pat dry afterwards.

Which cream should I use?

Any unscented, gentle moisturiser or a tattoo balm. The amount matters more than the brand: a very thin layer, rubbed in until the skin no longer shines.

When can I go swimming?

When the tattoo is fully healed, usually about four weeks. Pools, the sea and bathtubs soak the skin and carry bacteria into a healing wound.

When can I go back to the gym?

Light training after two or three days, as long as the tattoo is not stretched or rubbed. Wipe equipment before you touch it, and wash the tattoo after.

Is itching normal?

Yes, during the peeling stage. Tap it or press gently; scratching pulls ink out with the flakes.

Ready for the next one?

When your tattoo has settled, send us a healed photo. If you are planning another piece, start a brief.
